Postpartum Doula: Which package is right for you?

No one should go through new parenthood alone!

It's too exciting and challenging to have to struggle in silence! A postpartum doula helps parents and babies get off to the best start in their new lives together. I provide support, encouragement, information, and practical help to get you through the days and nights as you learn and grow as a unique family. Start with a FREE 45-minute consultation to learn about postpartum doula support. My services range from one-on-one 90-minute consultations to comprehensive packages that support you in the first weeks and months with your new baby.

What is a Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula is like a new-fangled Mary Poppins. They bring a magic bag of tools to your home, are calm and patient, know a lot about babies and what you’re going through, and don’t impose their ideas on you.

Who wouldn’t want that?!

A postpartum doula is a professional who has learned all about postpartum recovery, infant care and feeding, emotional adjustments, and family dynamics. They know how to help families in a personalized way. You get to pick your doula, just like you get to pick your friends. Having that kind of control over who is in your home and around you in those vulnerable first days and weeks — and knowing you won’t have to worry about unsolicited advice and opinions — can empower you to receive the support you deserve as a new parent.

Doulas can be helpful to anyone who has a new baby. It doesn’t matter if you gave birth, adopted, or had a surrogate… YOU have a baby in the house!

Because taking care of a newborn is inherently unpredictable, it can be incredibly comforting to know you have a doula on your side. We will talk about what to expect with a new baby, help you navigate postpartum adjustment, provide in-the-moment guidance for whatever pops up on your journey, and support you with options as you make the many decisions involved in infant care and parenting.

If that sounds like what you want, the next question is… am I the doula for you?

Here's what I can promise you...

I understand the many challenges of having a new baby and I will never judge what you are doing to navigate this time.
I will take the time to learn your specific preferences.
I will share everything I know, tips, and resources to make your transition into parenthood as smooth as possible.

As your doula, I will do many things for you…

PRENATAL PLANNING VISIT

This visit is held in your home to discuss your goals for the first weeks and months with your new baby. We can discuss what you want to do to get ready for life with a baby, make lists of the most necessary things to have on hand, plan for the kind and amount of support you think you’ll want, your preferences for self care, infant care, and home care, and generally get to know each other.

NIGHTTIME IN-HOME SUPPORT

I come to your home for 8-12 hour shifts. We usually begin by having a chat so I can learn if you have any special needs for this shift. The focus at night is sleep for you and your family, while I take care of your baby. I can feed your baby for you if your priority is uninterrupted sleep, or will bring your baby to you for feeding and then take care of the rest. Light housekeeping tasks may be provided (while your baby is with you) as a 2-4 hour add on to a night shift.

I am certified as a postpartum doula by NAPS Doulas.

DAYTIME IN-HOME SUPPORT (Currently not available)

I come to your home for 3-6 hour shifts. You don’t even have to get out of bed if you don’t want to! We usually begin by having a chat so I can learn what is going on presently. Then, we prioritize your needs for that shift. Here are the types of support I might provide:

Parent care – In the first weeks with a new baby, you are learning a whole new way to exist. Not only is your daily routine drastically shifting, so is your identity, your energy, and your relationships. I support parents with daily life strategies for physical recovery if you’ve given birth, sleep, self care, relationships, and role adjustments.

If you find your body sore or tense from holding or feeding your baby for hours each day, I can show you the best body mechanics to keep you strong and prevent pain. You may want a shoulder rub or scalp massage, or a foot rub or hand massage, to help you relax and be still for 15 minutes. I can also hold your baby while you shower, bathe, or rest.

I can help you create routines that support your whole family and the many transitions you’ll be making each day.

And if you simply need someone to hear and witness your triumphs and struggles, I am here to listen, acknowledge you, and reflect on your experience.

Infant care – So many new things to learn! I can help you with feeding, diapering, bathing, dressing, swaddling, baby-wearing, soothing, and more. I can show you how, we can do it side-by-side, or I can coach you from the sidelines. However you want to learn to care for your baby, I will support you. I can also provide information on the patterns of infant sleep so you can work with your baby’s sleep cycles to support healthy sleep.

Home care – I offer limited housekeeping support for the things that keep your home as orderly as possible with a new baby. I will do light housekeeping such as vacuuming, watering houseplants, loading or emptying the dishwasher, bringing in the mail, feeding the pets, or taking out the trash. I can do the baby’s laundry, make easy-to-grab snacks for you, do meal prep, and organize the baby’s room or kitchen for maximum efficiency. Things I don’t do: dusting, window cleaning, sibling care, grocery shopping, errands, or dog walking.

Frequently asked questions

Please call me or fill out my contact form and I will tell you if I am available for your due date. I limit the number of births I attend to 3 per month, and most people contact me when they are 4-6 months pregnant, but feel free to contact me at any point in your pregnancy.

As early as you feel working with me will be helpful to you. We can start to meet and get to know each other, explore your ideas and questions, make plans, and prepare for birth and postpartum whenever you are ready. For most people, that’s around 6-7 months into their pregnancy.

I support you before, during, and after your birth wherever or however it occurs. Due to hospital policies, there are some things I might not be allowed to do. For example, I may not be allowed into the operating room with you. But here’s what I can control: I will be at the hospital with you before your birth to support you as you get ready to meet your baby. If I’m not allowed in the OR with you, I will wait for you in your labor room, or the waiting room, and then join you after your baby is born to help you get settled postpartum. I will visit you at home after you leave the hospital. My services and fee are the same for all types of birth, but we can negotiate if you have special circumstances.

Yes, always. I structure my business to reduce the chance of ever needing one, but I work with another experienced doula to be there in my place in case of emergency, illness, or injury. A Meet & Greet can be arranged if you’d like to meet my backup doula. I ensure you will be covered if I can’t be there!

I have been a doula since 2018 and have worked with over 100 families. You can read about my training and experience here. (link to About Me page)
